West Palm Beach, which was originally established in 1894 by Henry Flagler to house Palm Beach hotel staff, has become the most populous city in Palm Beach County. Located on the Intracoastal Waterway across from exclusive Palm Beach, West Palm Beach was grown into a destination for locals and tourists alike. The downtown area, which includes the Clematis Street corridor and adjacent CityPlace, includes open air shopping, bars, restaurants, shops, and the center of Palm Beach County government. Downtown real estate primarily includes high-rise condominiums; however at the edges of the downtown core are several historic neighborhoods that support a range of single family homes, from small starter homes to more luxurious estate home with frontage on the Intracoastal Waterway.
West of the downtown core and I-95 residential real estate offerings change and become more suburban in nature. Communities west of I-95 include non-gated single family neighborhoods, gated communities, country club communities, age restricted communities, townhomes, and garden-style rental apartment complexes. This section of West Palm Beach also offers an assortment of retail centers, medical office buildings and professional office parks.
